Our Ethical Approach to Data

We are committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards in our handling of healthcare data, ensuring its secure and responsible use to protect patient privacy and trust. Synapsys IQ only ever uses pseudononymised data and utilises the NHS Safe data environment to enable simple compliance with all small number suppression requirements.

Internal Ethics Review Board Meeting Minutes

Synapsys IQ Limited will utilisedata accessed from the NHS Safe Data Environment to produce dashboards, reports, and studies based on aggregated, suppressed, non-sensitive, and non-identifiable data with the aim of answering and supporting the following points:

  • Improve Patient Safety: Contributing to safer and more effective prescribing by reviewing medicines dispensed in the community data alone and in the context of NHS hospital activity.

  • Inform Planning and Monitor National Priorities: Benchmarking performance against other hospital providers or ICBs to understand the context of these performances in relation to community prescribing or hospital activity.

  • Provide Tailored Solutions: Supporting commissioning, analytical support, and outcomes analytics for the NHS.

  • Improve Services: Measuring the uptake and effectiveness of new medicines, focusing on community prescribing patterns and reviewing the concomitant prescribing and subsequent NHS hospital activity.

  • Support NHS Organisations: Provide solutions that support the health and social care sector, benefiting patients utilising the NHS.

  • Isolate Prescribing Improvements: Identify viable prescribing improvements in line with optimal prescribing guidance to ensure national consistency.

  • Inform Planning and Monitoring: Assist in planning and monitoring against national guidelines and priorities.

  • Contextualise Prescribing: Provide context for prescribing in relation to NHS hospital activity.

  • Enable Non-NHS Collaborators: Facilitate benefits to health and improve patient well-being by enabling non-NHS but NHS collaborating organisations within life sciences, social care, charities, and healthcare providers to use the generated information.

Each non-NHS organisation seeking access to our aggregate, small number suppressed analyses will undergo an assessment by our internal ethical review board. This review ensures that the projects align with our internal ethics and values policies, as well as our commitment to benefiting the health and social care sector.

The overarching aim is to become an enabler for further insight generation and research, enhancing the current knowledge base of the NHS. This will lead to a better understanding of links, patterns, variations, dynamics, and forecasts, empowering continuous or improved decision-making to benefit patients.

Public Review and Awareness:

The public will have the opportunity to review positive outcome case studies from actioned projects, which will help increase awareness of certain therapies, showcase progress, and potentially benefit patients who have experienced safer and more effective prescribing firsthand.

Collaboration with Charities and Patient Groups:

Synapsys IQ Limited personnel have experience working with charities and patient groups. We intend to share relevant information with these groups, allowing them to disseminate it to their audiences. This approach will amplify the awareness benefits by concentrating the provision of information to those most affected by the therapy areas in question.
